Credit and Debit Cards for Car Rental in Croatia
What you need to know before you collect the car
One of the most common questions before renting a car is surprisingly simple: can I rent a car with a debit card, or do I need a credit card?
Payment methods, security deposits and card rules can make car rental feel more complicated than it needs to be. At M.A.C.K. Rent a Car we think you should understand the important details before you arrive to collect your car. So here is a simple guide to using credit and debit cards for car rental in Croatia, what to check before your trip, and why the card you use matters.
Can You Rent a Car with a Credit or Debit Card?
Yes. At M.A.C.K. we accept both credit and debit cards. Debit cards are always accepted, so you do not need a credit card to rent a car with us. We also fully accept American Express, along with the other major payment cards.
It is worth knowing, though, that paying for your rental and providing a security deposit are two related but separate parts of the process. A security deposit is always required, and the amount can depend on the car category, the cover you choose and the conditions of your booking. If anything about the deposit or the payment is unclear, get in touch before you arrive and we will explain exactly what applies to you.
In short: debit cards are always accepted, American Express is fully accepted, and a security deposit is required on every rental. More detail on our debit card rental page.
Credit Card vs. Debit Card: What Is the Difference?
A credit card lets you spend against a credit limit set by your card issuer. A debit card is usually connected directly to the money in your bank account.
For everyday shopping the difference hardly matters. For car rental it can, because a security deposit is required, and depending on the card you use, that deposit may temporarily affect how much money or credit you have available during the trip. Whichever you prefer, both are accepted at M.A.C.K.
Why Is a Card Required When Renting a Car?
Your card is not only used to pay for the rental. It is also used for the security deposit. The deposit protects the rental during the time you have the car, and may cover costs that are not included in the rental price or your chosen cover, according to your rental agreement.
The important thing to remember: your rental payment and your security deposit are not the same thing.
What Is a Pre-Authorisation?
When the security deposit is taken as a pre-authorisation, an agreed amount is temporarily reserved on your card. It is not the same as a normal purchase. The amount may show as pending or unavailable and can temporarily reduce your available balance or credit limit.
For example, if the deposit is reserved on a debit card, that money may not be available for you to spend while the pre-authorisation is active. That is why it is important to arrive with enough available funds or credit for both your trip and the deposit.
What Happens to the Deposit When You Return the Car?
When the car is returned in line with the rental agreement and there are no outstanding charges, the deposit is released. Once we start the release, your bank or card provider still has to process it, so the money may not be available on your card the moment you hand back the keys. How long it takes depends on your bank, your card issuer and the payment system.
One detail that often causes confusion: if the deposit was a pre-authorisation rather than a charge, you may never see a transaction labelled "refund". The reserved amount simply becomes available again once your bank processes the release.
Before You Arrive: Check Your Card
A few quick checks before you travel make pick-up much smoother. Make sure that:
- your card is valid for the whole rental period
- you have enough available funds or credit for the deposit
- your card allows the necessary transactions
- the card details meet the requirements in your booking conditions
- you have checked the security deposit for the car you have chosen
Remember, debit cards are accepted on every M.A.C.K. rental and American Express is fully accepted too. If you have any questions about your card or the deposit, just ask us before you arrive.
Is the Deposit Always the Same Amount?
Not necessarily. The deposit can depend on the car, the rental conditions and the cover you choose, which matters when you are comparing different cars or protection options. Rather than assuming it will be the same for every booking, check the conditions for the specific car you are looking at. Our insurance guide explains how Standard and Premium insurance work.
What If I Have Questions About Payment?
Ask us. Car rental terms are not always straightforward, especially when you are dealing with payment rules in another country. If anything about your credit card, debit card, deposit, pre-authorisation or rental conditions is unclear, contact the M.A.C.K. team before you collect the car and we will explain what applies to your booking in plain terms.
No unnecessary complications. No guessing at the rental desk.
